Reader Question: I'm a Feminist – Can I Still Have Submissive Fantasies and Want to Submit?
Dear Dr. Kinky Team,
I've studied political science, actively engage in feminist groups, and see myself as a convinced feminist. I fight for equality, body shaming freedom, self-determination, and against patriarchal structures – that's an important part of my identity.
At the same time, for years I've had very intense submissive sexual fantasies. I'm extremely aroused by completely surrendering sexually to a man (or sometimes several men), being "used" hard, being insulted as "slut" or "submissive sex bitch," and having the feeling of no control. I regularly go to swinger and BDSM clubs to parties with strong male surplus, let myself be taken there by strangers, used orally and vaginally, sometimes even by several at the same time – and it's the most intense, liberating sex I know.
But afterward, the big shame always comes. I wonder: How does that fit with my feminism? Can I as a feminist have such fantasies at all and live them out? By voluntarily "submitting" and enjoying being treated as an object, don't I betray everything I otherwise stand for? Don't I promote exactly the patriarchal structures I'm fighting against? Sometimes I feel like a hypocrite: During the day I post about consent and empowerment, at night I willingly let myself be humiliated and used.
I know rationally that consent is everything and that my fantasies harm no one – I choose it myself and enjoy it. But emotionally, these doubts gnaw strongly at me. I shame myself and am afraid that other feminists would judge me if they knew.
How can I reconcile my feminist values with my need for submissive, partially humiliating sexuality? Is that even possible, or do I have to give up one side of myself?
Thank you very much for an honest and understanding answer – I hardly dare to address it in my real environment.
Best regards

I'm a Feminist – Can I Still Have Submissive Fantasies and Want to Submit?
Dear Torn Feminist,
Thank you for your open and very brave letter. You touch on a topic that concerns incredibly many women – especially those who understand themselves politically and socially as feminists and at the same time have intense submissive, partially degrading sexual fantasies. You're by no means alone, and the most important thing upfront: Yes, you can. Your fantasies don't contradict your feminism – on the contrary, they can even be an expression of your feminist self-determination.
1. Feminism and Sexual Self-Determination Belong Together
The core of modern feminism (especially the third and fourth wave and sex-positive feminism) is women's autonomous freedom of decision over her own body and sexuality. That means: A woman may have sex as she wants – vanilla, dominant, submissive, hard, soft, with one partner or with several. As long as everything is consensual, safe, and wanted by you, you violate no feminist principles.
The thought that submissive or "slutty" fantasies are "patriarchal" often comes from a misunderstood second wave of feminism, where sexuality was sometimes strongly regulated ("good sex is only equal and tender"). Today's feminists like Jessica Valenti, Roxane Gay, or the sex-positive movement (e.g. "Come as You Are" by Emily Nagoski) say clearly: Fantasy ≠ Reality. You can fight the patriarchy during the day and have fantasies at night where you surrender exactly to these structures (controlled and voluntarily) – that's no betrayal, but an act of sovereignty.
2. Why Precisely Submissive and Degrading Fantasies Can Be So Powerful
Many women with strong everyday self-confidence (like you with your commitment) experience submissive or "slut" fantasies as liberation. During the day, you carry responsibility, make decisions, fight. In the sexual context, letting go, being "used," releasing control, and feeling like a "slut" can be an intense contrast – a valve, a vacation mode for the brain. It's comparable to riding a roller coaster: You voluntarily let yourself be put in danger because you know it's safe and you can stop anytime.
The feeling of being desired and used by several men at the same time can also be an expression of sexual power: You are the center, you decide (through your presence and your boundaries) who touches you. You're not the passive object – you're the one who makes this scene possible and directs it.
3. Overcome Shame – You Betray No One
The shame usually comes from having learned that "good" feminists must be "good" and "strong" – also in bed. But true strength shows in that you know your desires and live them without twisting yourself.
Helpful thoughts:
- Fantasy ≠ Politics: What excites you in bed doesn't have to reflect your political stance. Millions of feminists have submissive, gangbang, or humiliation fantasies – and still fight for equality.
- Consent is the Key: You choose it actively, set boundaries, have safewords or clear rules in the clubs. That's the opposite of patriarchal oppression – that's pure self-determination.
- You Harm No One: Your fantasies and parties take place in consensual spaces. The men who "use" you do it because you want it – not the other way around.
4. Practical Tips for a Better Feeling
- Read Sex-Positive Feminists: Books like "The Ethical Slut" (Dossie Easton & Janet Hardy), "Slut!" by Roxane Gay, or "Come as You Are" by Emily Nagoski show how women proudly live their "slutty" or submissive side and still be feminists.
- Talk to Other Women: In our Online Community or on FetLife/Joyclub there are groups like "Feminist Subs," "Sex-Positive Feminism," or "Submissive Women." There many tell exactly of your conflict – and how they've solved it.
- Reframing: After a party, write to yourself: "I wanted that. I enjoyed it. I'm strong because I live my desires."
- Integration: Some women separate consciously: Day activist, night submissive bitch. Others integrate it: "My surrender is my decision – and therefore feminist."
- Aftercare for Yourself: After intense parties, you also need care – a bath, a good book, self-praise. That reduces shame.
5. You Don't Have to Give Up Anything
You don't have to give up either your feminism or your sexuality. Both can coexist and even enrich each other. Many women report that by consciously living their submissive side, they've become even stronger and more confident in everyday life – because they know: "I decide over my body, always."
Conclusion: You Are a Strong, Authentic Feminist – Exactly As You Are
Dear Feminist, Your Fantasies Don't Make You a Hypocrite – They Make You a Woman Who Lives Her Sexuality in Full Breadth. That's Feminism in Pure Form: The Freedom to Say Yes to What Fulfills You.
Enjoy Your Parties, Your Surrender, Your "Slut Feeling" – Without Guilt. You Deserve It.
You Are Wonderful – In Every Facet.
